  • SADCO project subject: Discrete mechanics and optimal control

Recently, a new numerical approach to the solution of optimal control problems for mechanical systems has been proposed which is based on a direct discretization of the Lagrange-d’Alembert Principle, rather than on a direct discretization of the equations of motion. This approach yields a finite-difference type discretization of the dynamic constraints on configuration space only which, by construction, preserves important structural properties of the system, such as the evolution of the momentum maps associated with the symmetries of the Lagrangian and energy evolution. The method has already been applied successfully to a wide variety of exemplar systems. We propose to extend this so called Discrete Mechanics and Optimal Control approach to apply to more general classes of problems, and to develop accurate and stable numerical tools in order to further improve its effectiveness.
